Stefano Manzi claimed victory in the first 2025 World Supersport race on Saturday at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit. The Italian rider immediately took the new Yamaha YZF-R9 to the top step of the podium after an intense battle on the spectacular Australian circuit.
With blazing sunshine and an air temperature of 34°C, conditions on Saturday afternoon were particularly demanding at Phillip Island. Thanks to a strong start, Manzi quickly moved up from the third row into the top five, immediately joining the fight for the podium. After just three laps, the Italian had taken the lead, but the battle at the front remained fierce, ensuring that victory was anything but easy.
Following a flawless pit stop by the Pata Yamaha Ten Kate Racing team, Manzi continued to push hard in the second half of the race. The two-time World Supersport vice champion executed several bold overtakes, ultimately crossing the finish line as the race winner by a narrow margin.
Having ended 2024 with a victory in the final race of the Yamaha R6, Manzi has now also crowned the Yamaha R9’s race debut with a victory. The second World Supersport race at Phillip Island will take place on Sunday at 14:30 local time (04:30 Central European time). The race will again be contested over 18 laps, featuring a mandatory pit stop due to severe tyre wear.

It’s important to start the season this way because the winter tests in Spain and also here in Phillip Island were quite challenging. “This is the dream debut you hope for. Last year we won the final race with the R6, and now we’ve won the very first race with the R9. We couldn’t be happier. We knew we had strong race pace from the very first test day, but as always, we remain critical of ourselves to extract the maximum performance. Stefano executed that perfectly today, and our strategy paid off in the end.Perhaps we focused a little too much on race performance, as we’re still lacking that one outright fast lap with the R9. However, tomorrow we will start from the front row—where we had hoped to be after qualifying. With the data we’ve gathered from today’s race, we’ll work on making another step forward. I believe there’s still room for improvement in terms of consistency, so we’ll see if we can improve our race pace by a few tenths.

Stefano Manzi heeft zaterdag de eerste World Supersport race van 2025 gewonnen op het Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit. De Italiaan wist de nieuwe Yamaha YZF-R9 meteen naar de overwinning te rijden na een spannende strijd op het altijd spectaculaire Australische circuit.
Onder een fel schijnende zon, met een buitentemperatuur van maar liefst 34°C, waren de omstandigheden zaterdagmiddag behoorlijk uitdagend op Phillip Island. Dankzij een goede start wist Stefano Manzi vanaf de derde startrij al gauw op te schuiven naar de top vijf en zich te mengen in de strijd voor het podium. Na drie ronden reed de Italiaan al aan de leiding maar er werd vooraan flink gestreden waardoor hij het niet cadeau kreeg.
Na een foutloze pitstop van het Pata Yamaha Ten Kate Racing team ging Manzi in de tweede helft van de race door met strijden voor de overwinning. De tweevoudig vicewereldkampioen in de World Supersport klasse moest een aantal gewaagde inhaalacties uit de kast halen en daarmee wist hij uiteindelijk met een klein verschil als winnaar over de streep te komen.
Nadat hij vorig jaar de laatste race van de Yamaha R6 afsloot met een overwinning heeft Manzi het racedebuut van de Yamaha R9 ook meteen bekroond met een overwinning. De tweede World Supersport race op het Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit gaat zondag opnieuw om 14:30 uur lokale tijd, 04:30 uur Nederlandse tijd van start. De race wordt wederom over achttien ronden verreden met daarin een verplichte pitstop vanwege de hoge bandenslijtage.

“Dit is een geweldige manier om een nieuw seizoen te beginnen met deze overwinning, en het is ook fantastisch om voor het eerst met de nieuwe motor te racen en meteen te winnen. Het is een ongelooflijke dag en ik wil Yamaha en het Pata Yamaha Ten Kate Racing team bedanken, want zij hebben veel moeite in dit project gestoken.Het was geen gemakkelijke race, want we moesten hard vechten en ook de pitstop halverwege nog uitvoeren. Ik ben ontzettend blij dat we deze overwinning hebben behaald en hopelijk kunnen we op deze manier doorgaan. Het is belangrijk om het seizoen zo te beginnen, want de wintertesten in Spanje en hier op Phillip Island waren behoorlijk uitdagend. Dit laat zien dat we erbij zitten, dus laten we zien wat er komen gaat.”

“Dit is het debuut waar je van droomt. Vorig jaar wisten we de laatste race met de R6 te winnen en nu winnen we meteen de eerste race met de R9. Daar kunnen we niet anders dan super tevreden mee zijn. We wisten dat we een goed racetempo hadden, want dat was vanaf de eerste testdag al zo, maar zoals altijd blijven we kritisch op onszelf om het maximale eruit te halen. Dat heeft Stefano vandaag gedaan en de strategie die we hadden gevolgd heeft uiteindelijk goed uitgepakt. Wellicht hebben we ons iets te veel gericht op de wedstrijd want het rijden van die ene snelle ronde beheersen we op dit moment nog niet met de R9.Morgen starten we vanaf de eerste rij – daar waar we na de kwalificatie al hoopten te staan – en met de nieuwe informatie van deze eerste race gaan we aan de slag om te kijken of we nog een stapje kunnen maken. Ik denk dat er nog iets te halen valt qua constantheid dus we gaan kijken of we ons racetempo nog met een paar tienden verder aan kunnen scherpen. We kijken er met z’n allen alweer enorm naar uit om morgen weer te racen.
